Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's weirdly compelling version of Mary Webb's novel about a Shropshire lass called Hazel Woodus, who communes with nature (notably a fox who lives in the mossy, mystical forest) and is at odds with the local community. Produced by Alexander Korda and David O Selznick, who saw it as a showcase for his wife, Jennifer Jones, it's a full-blooded melodrama, a piece of Celtic chemistry dominated by the unearthly beauty of Miss Jones. When Selznick saw the finished film he cut 30 minutes, retitled it The Wild Heart and ordered new scenes by director Rouben Mamoulian. Naturally it flopped everywhere, but has lately been restored and revalued alongside all of Powell and Pressburger's distinctive work.
