Dedicated to the work of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger and all the other people, both actors and technicians who helped them make those wonderful films. A lot of the documents have been sent to me or have come from other web sites. The name of the web site is given where known. If I have unintentionally included an image or document that is copyrighted or that I shouldn't have done then please email me and I'll remove it. I make no money from this site, it's purely for the love of the films. [Any comments are by me (Steve Crook) and other members of the email list] |

Powell & Pressburger - Frequently Asked Questions
2.7.1 P&P Films
These are all the P&P films in Steve's library. It's fairly much a list of everything available on DVD, laserdisk or video (if there are any missing I'd like to know).
Please also see the still wanted list. This is a list of all the commercially released P&P titles, they might not all be currently available but knowing that they have been released means that you might also find them on the second hand market.
I had to split this into separate pages for DVDs, Laserdisks and Videos.
See the list of places to buy the films from.

They're a Weird Mob (1966) THEY'RE A WEIRD MOB Is about Sydney, Australia in 1965, a sprawling, growing city of three million people. And what people! Easy going, down-to-earth and hilariously funny. In truth, a very weird mob. Into the city comes innocent, Italian immigrant Nino Culotta. The adventures of Nino fitting in with this .Wierd mob., learning their ways and outlandish language makes for a particularly funny Oz comedy. All the more funny it was made by esteemed English producer-director Michael Powell ("The Red Shoes", "A Matter of Life and Death").
Following it's premiere at Sydney's State Theatre on August 16,1966, THEY'RE A WEIRD MOB became a record breaking success around the nation. The cast, although headed by Italy's Walter Chiari as "Nino", reads like a who's who of Australian show-biz legends including Chips Rafferty, Ed Devereaux, Slim deGrey, John Meillion, Tony Bonner, Barrry Creyton, Noel Brophy and Graham Kennedy.

Pavlova: A Woman for all Time (1983) Michael Powell was credited as the "Western Version Supervisor" on Pavlova, but nobody is too sure exactly what that involved. He was originally hired as some type of producer. He did go to Moscow while it was being filmed. Further research is being carried out to try to figure out exactly what he did on this film.

Region Coding:
Where the DVD region number is followed by a question mark it means that the disk comes from a certain region but doesn't have the region coding indicated on the case. My DVD player is a "region free" player so I can't tell if region coding is actually used - it plays them all regardless. In that case I'm not sure if region coding is used but if it is it will most probably be for the region number shown.Where the DVD region number is shown as '0' it means it has been confirmed that it is a "Region 0" disk and can be played in any region.
There is information about DVD Regions in section FAQ264_DVD.html.

Status of Powell and Pressburger's A Matter of Life and Death (1946) - It took two years to get access to original source material at the British Film Institute, but restoration on this title is now complete and a high definition transfer has been done. The film has been added to Columbia's schedule for release. It is still a minimum of four months away, though, as Columbia adheres strictly to a policy of only making specific release information available for titles it expects to release within three-to-four months.
Reported in DVD Savant's Review on 21st March 2004.
Columbia Tristar has announced an R1 DVD of A Matter of Life and Death for May 25. This is very good news for us; fans have been expecting this one since 2001 when Columbia finished a remaster. Curious that it bears the English title, but I suppose it's better than the American one; Stairway to Heaven. Thanks, Glenn Erickson
(June 2004) Further delays to this one. It is reported that Martin Scorsese is doing a commentary. That'd make the wait worthwhile.(August 2006) It's all gone very quiet about this one. I know Marty's a busy man, but I'm sure he can't be the only reason for the hold up.
(September 2007) Maybe he is. Thelma confirms it is definitely planned, as soon as she and Marty can do the commentary.
